One thing I wish I could do is go to a page on this forum with a list of fish types: Neon Tetras, Guppies, German Blue Rams, Corydoras, and then click on the specific fish and see a list of forum members that own that type of fish and don't mind being asked questions about them. I know there are specialists on here in Bolivian Rams, and I wish I could ask them a quick question without having to start a new thread and just hope that one of the Ram experts spots that specific thread.

Seems to me that it could be designed in a way that members who wish to be listed are able to tag their fish types on their profile. This would then auto populate that user's name in the forum that contains the index of fish names. I don't know the mechanics of the forum database, but that would seem to be a good way to do it without a moderator having to take messages from users saying "please add my name to the Neon Tetra list".

This would probably also encourage some friend invites as members with the same fish tastes send information back and forth.

Thanks,
Greenville Guy

Surely you could find out who those people are by visiting the appropriate section of the forum and seeing who the regular posters there are?

not everyone who claims to be an 'expert' is an expert.

Sure - that just takes a bit of work, and some guessing. I troll the New World Cichlid forum, but there are some many different types of Cichlids that it's difficult to tell who has which fish types. Then I have to look at sigs and profiles, etc. If the database software itself was capable of doing it, this would just add a member-friendly feature. If the software can't do it in an automated fashion, then I don't think it's worth the effort.

tbh an easy way of finding out who keeps what would be to encourage people to post images of their species in the relevant profile pages, This part of the site has long been forgotten and sometimes neglected IMO, with new additional pages failing to be added an out of date data not getting updated.

I mean there are a lot of easy questions asked by new members who sometimes don't realise this exists. By encouraging owners of these species to post their it helps promote the pages and also allows for people interested in these species to instantly know who else keeps them.

Try this forum on TFF....... plenty of fish indexed here by our members.

So you would like the forum to cater just for your laziness?

Wow. Really? I was just suggesting a feature that I thought would automate and improve the forum interaction. I'm an IT professional, and I like to improve database processes to make things easier for users. And this is a suggestions board.

I think it isn't a bad idea. I just think that ianho's point about a lot of claims of expertise usually isn't. I suspect that by the time we got the database up and running, that it would be out of date. Like a lot things in the forum world, we've had a lot of people who were very active and knowledgeable members who have given up the hobby. And, unfortunately, we've had a lot of people who claim to be experts, but their lack of knowledge was soon discovered. So, I think that we'd get a lot of people who were eager when they signed up who just wouldn't be available later -- and some people who probably shouldn't even be in the db. And, who decides who is an isn't "in"? With an all-volunteer staff, I think that this is beyond our scope as a free forum.

I understand your reasoning - makes sense. I did not know it was an all volunteer staff on this forum!! Thanks for considering the suggestion.
