what size pond what be ideal for sturgeon say 1 pair of them?

and could you give me a guide to the dementions to get that amount of gallons!!

just out of interest!!

you will need at least 1.000 uk gallons

maybe 15ftx 8ftx 30" deep

but the bigger the better

i have 2 siberians in a 800 gallon pond
i bought them last sep at 6"long....
now they are 18.5" inches long
there growth rate is phenomonal.....

i am now looking for new homes for my 2

see this site for info on keepign stonks

http://www.sturgeon-web.co.uk/

hope this helps

macky ;)

hmmmm on a fish classifields i saw, someone was selling there sturgeon because there 3800 gallon pond was too small.

from ous LFS's they'ved said they can reach a spectacular 5ft

you can keep 2 sterlets in a 1000 gallon but the bigger species need more space like The beluga (although you will never find any for sale) would need about 100,000 gallons as I recal sterlets only get to be about 1.2 meters long so they would be the best option for someone who doesn't want a huge pond also at only 1.2 meters they will not be eating large koi which can be an expensive way t feed fish.

The smallest species are Sterlets which will reach 36"-40". Other Sturgeons can range from 45" to the great Sturgeons which can reach 30'. I would advise something bigger than a 1000 gallon. Maybe a 2000-3000 for Sterlets and 5000+ for the other smaller species. The large species like the Great Sturgeon IMO shouldn't be kept in captivity.

hmm Ryan (not to hijack post but) I think that if you could keep some (and breed them) in a ludicrasly large pond/ small man made lake It would be a good thing Its way better than just letting the species die out like we are doing now aren't they #3 on the red list right after giant pandas and whatchamacallum tigers?

just my 2 cents

Yes you are right opcn, if anyone can provide that kind of room it would be great to breed them and release them to the wild where they belong and sadly yes there are several species of Sturgeons high up on the Red list, including the Siberian Sturgeon. I was just advising them against keeping them in the large garden pond say 10,000 gallons because that is to small and most people can't provide a 100,000 gallon+ pond/lake for them.

wow a 30' fishy, would really beable to make that size pond in the garden (well not with mothers veg patches and flowers  )

i liked the look of the albino species that was in that link (great site cheers!!)

surely fishig lakes would beable to house those massive buggers!! then again they might go about munching on there stock :/

pretty expensive though, we prefer buying the lil fish then we're able to watch them grow, so much more satisfeing!! (spelling :/ )

they commonly only reatch 14' in the wild... amd yes you koi would be food for them. a 100,000 gallon pond is only 64'-32'-8' I could fit that in my back yard :hyper: ... hmm I might not be on for a while *no emotocon for shovel dagnabit*

The biggest sturgeon, Huso huso, only gets to be about 15 feet long.
There has been twenty or more fish caught abovr the 26' mark, the largest being more than 9m ( 29'4" ) and 1400 kg.

I thought you meant there was a species of sturgeon that regularly gets that large. Do you have any links where I could read about the fish that did get that big? I'd be really interested in reading them.
