The horrific heat claimed the largest of my polyp colonies today. I think so anyway as they've not been out all day where as the others have. When can I be certain they are goners and remove them from the tank?

What type of polyps? Zoos? Zoas/palythoas? GSP? Other star polyp? Sun coral? Somethin else?

MOST polyps, especially those I listed are very hardy and can survive for a very long time in a "closed" state. My zoos are a textbook example. They suffered from a rock collapse that left them upsideown in the sand bed for anywhere up to 3 days while I was on vacation. They were closed up for a month before they finally started opening back up. Some of them went through what I can only describe as a "shedding" event just before they opened back up. Long story short, polyps can be tougher than you think so dont count them out yet.

Can you get a pic?

I have seen virtually dead polyp frags recover into fine specimins, don't chuck them away. They're probably simply shutting down to protect themselves from the excess heat..

I agree, a goby buried one of my polyp colonies in sand and I didn't find it for a few months. After discovering it I set it back up and they opened in about a week's time. I had another hitchhiker polyp survive being in the sump for a few months with no light as well as being out of the water for a day and it survived (it is now actually growing a few new polyps next to it).

They also get pissed off pretty easy. If you see them start to melt pull them out if not let them go. I have one GSP colony that hasn't opened for almost a month now because I moved it to the other tank. You just have to wait them out sometimes.
