I would like to have a hospital tank just in case.
I have a small tank 12 inches by 8inches by 8 inches, a heater and a biofoam filter. What I need to know is how to get it started. Do I use water from my main tank? If so how do I get the tank to have healthy bacteria in it for any sick fish?. I dont really want to have it set up all the time just when I need it is this possible? Hope to get some advise.

Use water from your old tank and cycle it without fish.

I'd suggest running the tank even when it doesn't have fish in it to make sure everything is in working order.

Plus, you could use that tank for shrimp or ADFs when you don't have sick fish in it.:D

I have (well, had since my female Krib became the Anit Christ) a 10US hospital tank. I always left it empty when it was not in use but have the filter media in my normal filter. After using the tank, I would boil the filter media incase of any disease/meds and then dry it on the radiator and put it back in the normal filter.

Whenever setting up my hospital tank I'd use 2/3 old water and the rest new.

P.S. I think a hospital tank is a very good idea

I'm learning something here. So you could run a small filter on your main tank all the time and then just plunk it in a small hospital tank with treated/temp water and bingo you're ready. You may have to watch main tank a little as you've removed some of the bacteria but that would be ok. COOL :D
