I was at PEtsmart today looking at the fish and the tanks, trying to get a good idea of what I want and in one of the tanks was an "opportunity fish"- a horseface loach...While they aren't the "prettiest" fish in the world, they are interesting looking. If they still have them in stock when I purchase my tank, I might by one. Shame I couldn't fit one in my 40 gallon but they get to be up to 8 inches.

Yes, they are not the most commonly sold loach species. However, this interesting and inquisitive fish should by no means be over looked providing you can provide suitable conditions for it.

The tank should contain sand or a very fine gravel to allow for these loaches to dig.
They spend most of the day burrowing beneath the substrate and are very active at night. Make sure to include several hiding spots. They are social fish best kept in groups of three or more and they do prefer subdued lighting. They are no more aggressive than most Loach species and can be kept happily in a community tank. The thing to consider is their size, they can easily reach 9 inches and with a prefered minimum of three per tank you need alot of space.

They're not terribly aggressive. Like a good sandy substrate to bury in. Clean the sand up nicely, nose into the sand, they move forward expelling the "processed" sand from their gill slits.

Are they aggressive in anyway, ie, would they hurt my other fish??
Mine has never even shown the slightest aggression. He is usually burried in the substrate, so when he is out, it is a real treat. I have had these guys before, and they are really cool. Shy, easy to get along with, and good cleaners. You wont regret it if you get one. I really love them..........
