Ive got terrible hair algae growing in the pond, its everywhere and the fish are struggling to swim through it all. Do I manually get rif of it or is there a good uk brand of algae destroyer out there?

Also with the winter coming will the cold kill it off?

ive had hair algae all year round, couldnt get rid of it tryed extract of braley straw that worked a little but i take a stick to it and get it out that way.

I couldnt get that page to work Wilder, will try tomorrow as im tired now, thanks.

Will see if i can get the straw as at least its natural.

Tomorrow will go and try to remove as much as i can.

Thanks :)

If the algae is the sort of stuff that turns the water green pea soup color, get a UV filter filter in the pond and it'll be gone in a couple of days if your main filtration is good. However, i'm not sure what will get rid of hair algae.

The straw is pretty useful. You can wind it around a scrubbing brush or use a spiky stick and just twist it and pull it out or just pull it out by hand if you dont mind wet hands. It will survive the winter, so I would get as much as possible out. A few plants around the edge ones with the roots in the water and leaves above are good at eating up the nutrients the algae want, if you can protect them from the fish. I keep a little of the pond fenced off from the fish and fill it with canadian pond weed and hornwort, it grows like crazy and keeps the water sweet.

Theres a uv in the filter and the water is clear just these tendrils everywhere and its about 3 inches thick on the liner looking like puffs of green smoke.
Looks like I have to get rid manually then. Thanks guys

My dad put the barley straw in the pond but it did take a while for it to work a couple of months.
And he has a uv lamp thing what ever they are lol.
But it did clear the water as he couldnt see the fish.

In this link the liner is covered and looks like the hair algae here http://www.floridadriftwood.com/algae_identification.html

The long strands of it are hanging off the waterfall and lying across and down the pond and could be blanket weed.

Is there any fish in the uk that will eat it and go through the winter?

My dad had blanket weed that why he used the barley straw, it a sign of a healthy pond but it looks a mess.
You could always think of shading the pond area with a structure over it.

Went out with the intention of trying to clear it away but thought no too icky lol. What a wuss

Thanks Wilder, will tackle it one day.

Lol black angel.

We use a U.V. filter and I don't think it does a good job.

The only thing uv stops is the peasoup type of algae.
Its falling down the sides of the pond now and if it gets to the bottom then i have a skimmer net that might catch it.
