RIP Gerard. This is the oddest case of death I've ever had. So I do all my betta's water changes every week, but a few days ago, it looked like Gerard had dropsy!!! So, I changed his water again, added aquarium salt, and left him. He was doing good up to yesterday, I thought he'd really pull through so I could go out and buy medication today, as I just got some money, but then, this morning, I woke up and found him dead. :(

:rip: Gerard

*Sigh* He was one of my favorites. :-(

Betta's should not be in bowls. To decrease the chances of dropsy a filter and heater would do wonders, plus a bigger tank, say a ten gallon would do. Even 100% water changes every week will not nutralize the amount of nitrate and ammonia build up in small bowls. It would have to be an every day water change which would cause great stress to the betta.

I'm sorry your betta died. He was gorgeous! :(

:X dropsy is horrible...sorry about your fish....it makes me cross when people have lost bettas and then people say what they could/should have done!

Hugs and fishey kisses.

first off sorry about you fish, my fav female just died.

second, bettas are fine in bowls, as long as it is big enough. especially a plakat like his that died.

AFI takes excellent care of his fish and every time I hear of them or see pics they seem very happy. :)

My bettas are in 3 gallon tanks, they have heaters but no filters and recieve 50% water changes weekly. The fish are constantly building bubblenests and are in perfect health. I understand what you mean, tiny bowls are no good - spot on there. But if a betta is happy in an unfiltered tank under 10 gals, then that's what matters.

Who ever said I kept him in a bowl. Yes it was a one gallon critter keeper, but that is way better than a bowl.

Thanks for all your sympathy everyone.

Do you test your water everyday?

Betta's may have lived in puddles in rice fields, but thoughs puddles streched thousands of miles.
A ten gallon is the same price as a 3 gallon or 5 gallon if you look in the right places. Betta's also like things to hide in.

I'm not talking to you in general. I'm talking to the whole forum. Betta's may be small fish but they can still get stunted and they still need a place to swim around. I has been proven that betta's live longer in tanks rather than bowls.

I'm not trying to be the bad guy, but I'm just thinking of the fish.

Would you rather live in your bathroom for the rest of your life or a clean, warm, full furnished, house?

The people here on this forum care for their bettas and do everything they can to keep them happy. Bettas don't NEED 10 gallons. Though I'm sure almost every betta would love to have one, most are just fine right where they are.

You don't have to tell us how to house our bettas because we already know, thanks.

And I'm very sorry for your loss :( :rip:
