i got my scarlet badis today! the owner of the store had gotten about eight in but he ended up with six males and two females, and with the over abundance of males was having difficulty getting them to breed. When i went in today i asked how much he was going to want for them when he put them up for sale, and he let me buy two of his extra males.

i am very happy.

this has been a stressful day and they are still pale from the ride here, but i love 'em anyhow. And for a pair of half inch fish in a 20 gallon tank, they don't disappear as much as you would think

I like the scarlet color of them.... I'd think about putting them in with gold rams or blue rams if i ever got them...

This would be a bad idea. Badis spp. should be kept alone or possibly with mid/upper level tetras. They feed very slowly, and there's no way in a small tank they could compete with rams. Cichlids generally would just hammer them. With Badis spp., what you want is a tank where they can stay close to the plants and eat frozen bloodworms and the like without having to hurry.

they are cousins of anabantoids so they will fight, but being such a small fish (and not the domesticated betta splendens which has been bred to be as aggressive as it is) I am hoping that they will be able to find their own territories within the 20 gallon. If not I have other tanks and seperating them will be easy. What i will be doing with the tank is dividing it with a rock in the center and planting the back corners thickly so each can claim a planted corner.

At the moment though they're still swimming around together, though the more red one is clearly the more dominant one.





[edit] for some inexplicable reason the rummynoses have adopted the subdominant male. I am sure this is temporary
