hello all newbie to the forum but oldie to the fish ,has anyone made there own filter ie gravity fed from the pump, using a coldwater tank or similar,id like to make one but not sure how to go about it,working on a budget this year any input would be great :/

I've never done this, but would love to hear other's answers. Perhaps you would get more help in the DIY section. :) Good luck!

Well you could always make a filter canister with a sealed lid and use japenese matting or a moving filter bed and run water through a tube from the pump to the canister and then allow another tube to return it to the tank as the sealed filter fills to its limit the water would be pushed back through the return tube into the tank.

thats what i had in mind filter the water from the pump up through levels of medium and exit the water at the top back into the pond ,not sure what to add though ive been told alternating layers of active charcoal ,gravel or grit and matting

Take at look at the lfs to see what media is available, Cloverleaf multi cone filter system, consisting of four and six chambers respectivly. The first vortex is for settlement, followed by a bay of kaldness moving bed media, while japanese matting is in the final two chambers of each system.

our filter is home made I think.

it's one of those black boxes you can get with a lid.

half the tank is filled with biological black rings/tubes, then there's 3/4 layers of sponge of different densities.

then it's pumped into the top then exits at the bottom in a waterfall kind of bit.

Pond filters are quite simple to make........

How many gallons is your pond?

How many gph is your pump rated for?
