I'm planning on getting a 125g tank soon.

I plan on running 2 AC 500's on it with one wet/dry filter. My question is:

Would it be worth it to make my own wet/dry filter? Or should I just buy one? My limit on all the filtration MAX would be $250.00, but that's why I wanted to build one myself(A lot cheaper). Thanks!

Also, btw: Would a home-made work just as well?

Yes, super cheap and super effective.

Buy a big rubbermaid container, and something for a tower. I used this:

First drawer, filter floss and sponger. Second drawer, Bioballs.I took out the last drawer. Connect the PVC/hosing to the top, water trickles through each stage, then into the sump (rubbermaid container). Then a pump, pumps the clean water back into the tank via hosing or PVC.

The Tower and the Rubbermaid container = $50 CDN
Pump = $40 CDN
PVC/Hosing = $15 CDN
Bioballs, sponges and filter floss = $50 CDN

That's $155 CDN, and thats because I got everything specialized. The other thing you need is an overflow, so you will have to borrow a glass cutting bit to cut into the tank.

Hmm, thanks for the info, But I have to be able to keep the filter inside the stand. :/ For the overflow, couldn't I just use a normal hang on the back one? I really wouldn't want to cut into a $500.00 tank. Lol :eek:

Lol, either would I. You can use a cheap powerhead. And most people keep thier Wet/Dry's inside the stand, whay couldnt you with my plans?

If its because of the tower, you can eliminate that, and use walls so the the water overflows into each of the different compartments.

Good luck.
