hi am i thinking that if i connect a say coke bottle to a hose on the end it would be the same as a gravel cleaner?

or is this a silly idea?

That pretty much describes it! As long as you get a good seal, cant see a problem with it, it might flow a fair wack though...

That is most of what you get with a gravel vac. They do put a check valve flap into a gravel vac to make it easier to get started. Be aware that the ratio of the hose diameter and the bottle diameter will affect how well it cleans without removing the gravel.
