Easy.
Since yu are in Huston, you will have some good delis around to get some good stuff.
They will look at you funny, but start smal till you get the feel for what you like to use and what your fish really go for.
Get a couple shrimp, a couple scallops, a little squid. Add a fillet of nice non fatty fish like Halibut, and a piece or two of miscellaneous seafood or shellfish.
Then you trot over to the Japanese ethnic section and get yourself one of those packages of dried seaweed.
This is your basic fishfood. You blend it all like crazy, then freeze. I spread mine on a cookie sheet, then chop it into pieces and bag it. Some anal types spread it into those little cube trays, (but I already get into trouble using the blender and cookie sheets so I am not about to test the waters with the party cube trays), ..
At feeding time I have one of those tupperware cylinders, (she warn't happy bout that either), I fill with tank water and put food in it to melt a bit. Then I have one of those single serving blenders I use to emulsify it. I then get the old turrkey baster and spray away. I pretty much target feed all my corals and the currents take care of the fishies.
Variations. The above is the starter for the food recipe. I add real fresh garlic, some cyclops, some flake, and usually a can or two of tuna.
Then when I blend at feeding time, I frequently rotate the addition of cyclops, phyto, selcon, a brine shrimp cube, you get the idea.
Yes, I blend shells and all in regards to any shellfish I add.
Yes, you will burn up a blender if not careful. This is a bad one. You burn up a blender, then have to go and buy the Missus a new one. Do you think she is going to appreciate you blending your next batch in her brand new one??? Because yes, it stinks when you are making it.
It is also very cost efficient. It will lok pricey when purchasing the ingredients, but lasts a long time.
On the fun side. You know that look you get when you tell someone not in the hobby that you paid 80 bucks for one rock?
You get that same look when you tell the deli clerk you are buying shrimp and lobster to feed your fish at home.
