i knicked an old submersable pump from a garden water feature and i was wondering whether i could use it for an internal filter?

i have managed to fix a carbon and foam filter to the exit pipe

i have run it thru boiling water twice now and scrubbed it

would the presence of a rubber elastic band in the water affect the fish in any way?

thanks

Did you really mean the 'exit' pipe?

The filter medium should be on the entrance pipe (so that the 'dirty' water is pulled through the medium) not the exit pipe as this will cause the pump to force 'dirty' water through the medium and will therefore reduce it's effectiveness.
As for the rubber band, i don't see a problem. It may deteriorate and break eventualy due to being submersed 24/7 but won't harm the tank IMO.

Look foreward to seeing pictures :)

i think it will be ok on the exit because the filter doesn't push water quicker than filter allows to pass through

i forgot to mention that it is a secondary filter with a carbon and foam filter on it.

and as for the picture...

Should that not be water in through the filter? to save your pumps impella getting all gunked up?

EDIT: oops thats already been said..... how hum, move along, nothing to see here ;)

I'm with stryker.

You gotta have it on the input to save heavy maintainance cleaning the inside of the pump.

Hope you aint gone past the point of no return with you diy.
I'm so good at doing that.

Hi ad_smith :)

I try to avoid using rubber bands in my tank for fear that when they deteriorate and break apart, the fish might eat them.

I prefer to use either the lead strips that hold bunches of plants together, or lengths of heavy white cotton thread. A suitable thread can be found in the sewing area of a department store in the crochet section, but any heavy white cord will do. :D

right thanks for the info everyone i think i'll give it a miss for now until i get a better pump

thanks

I tried that it doent work just buy a filter
the way i did it was buy puting filter wool on the intake and held it there with elastic bands it worked but it looks really chessy!
