I have an oscar who has had "hole in the head" disease for several years. I didn't realize he had a disease until I added two parrot cichlids to the the tank and they developed the disease also. Has anyone sucessfully treated their cichlids for this disease or are they a lost cause? I tied a five day treatment of "tetricycline" (I,m not sure of the spelling) with no results. Thanks.

this is a pretty common oscar disease. i heard however, there are 6 easy steps to curing this.

1. feed them well
2. 25 % water changes every 3 days
3. add 1 tbs of aquarium salt to every 5-10 gallons of water
4. raise temp to 80-82 degrees
5. remove carbon from all filters
6. if its not getting better, treat it with hexameta. and then do step 1-5 again.

thanks to adam from WC

HTH

Ive had HITH a couple of times due to my filters dieing and me not knowing about it.

What ex-amp said is really spot on and its how everyone should go about it, but another way i do it is....

20% water changes everyday, and i feed him less due to HITH thriveing in poor water conditions. I think your tank must be too small or you dont change water enough because thats really how it is brang on, by poor water conditions.
So i try as hard as i can to keep the water clean, if its been going on for a couple of years somthing makor is wrong cause its only ment to be around for a month and you can get rid of it in a week or it will show the holes getting smaller.

now that i know how to treat hole in the head how do u find out if ur oscars have it i think mine do the one has to dents almost holes in his head and other is not far behind do my oscars have hole in the head

what i've read is that most hole in the head cases are caused by poor water quality, so you should check ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels just in case, adn remedy any buildups, and also do slightly more frequent water changes.

as for identifying it, well, I have never seen it before (still don't have fish yet).
