Well .. this is probably just me going off on a flight of fancy and it may well never amount to anything but ...

I've been looking into getting some weather loaches and wondered if anyone on here could give me a bit of help - firstly, can anyone tell me what size tank i would ideally need. and secondly - can anyone recommend good tankmates (please not goldfish - no offence to all you goldfish lovers out there! lol)?

Thanks in advance

It really depends on what you want from the tank. I would get a nice 20-30 gallon tank and then go from there.
thats all i can really say lol

ok well basically all i wanted was to have a couple of weather loaches. I was thinking of having a shoal of something in there with him (wcmm or danios maybe??) but not sure what fish thrive in colder water and would get on ok with weather loaches.

I was also hoping to get a 3 ft tank but not sure if it would be large enough??

3ft would be fine for three of them and you could get a large shoal of minnows if you wanted.

Loaches prefer sand as well, and have hiding places for them too.

Personally i wouldn't keep these loaches in anything less than a 3ft long by 18inch wide tank, since these loaches grow quite large and are rather active fish and do best in groups. Make sure the substrate is preferably sand and at least 2-3inches deep, since these loaches love to dig around in the substrate and even burrow in it so it needs to be very soft and fine to allow the loaches to do this;

A shoal of rosey red (as known as fathead) minnows would make good tankmates for these loaches, bloodfin tetras can also be kept in temps as low as 18 degree's too. Weather loaches require good filtration which is strong in current and need frequent water changes, if you keep these loaches in the sub-tropical range (19-23 degrees) and the tank is strongly filtered enough (at least twice the amount of filtration nesarsary) you could also get some hillstream loaches if you manage to encourage some algae growth in the tank :thumbs: .
