Generally, piranhas arn't the viscious killing machines movies make them out to be, in reality they can be timid and easily scared. So if you're after the 'mouth with fins' imagine, you may be disappointed. There are piranhas you can keep in a 3ft tank, I'm no expert though but a sanchezi should be fine alone in that tank, I think PFK says the minimum for 1 red bellied piranha is a 3ft tank, so that could be another option. I'm sure there are others, however I thought I would let you know they arn't what they appear to be in movies.

If you like the idea of a schooling terror, look into exodons, they are like a small piranha but you should be able to keep a group (min I would recommend is 8,) in that tank.

In regards to ease of maintinance, a good external filter and plenty of water changes are about all thats needed I think.

please note that there is a minimum recommended number of exodons. this is because exodons are very aggressive fish and will turn on each other if there aren't enough in the school. if you can only get 2 or 3, then you'd be better off getting none at all.

Look to getting 8+ exodons as a minimum. Buying 12 will alow the biggest to kill off the weakest to leave you with 8-10.

And don't feed live animals. Many people buy piranhas just to watch them attack and kill live animals. Please don't buy them for these reasons. Piranhas (in my experience) take very readily to frozen food such as silver sides.

EDIT: To do stuff in the tank, use tongs. If you must stick your hand in the tank, try feeding them right before you do.
