"A Hong Kong woman kicked and punched a 4.5 metre (15 foot) Burmese python to wrest free her pet dog after the snake wrapped itself around it.

Catherine Leonard grappled with the python after it attacked Poppy during a walk in the Sai Kung country park.

Ms Leonard, 41, said she heard "a yelping that was like a scream".

She said she acted because she remembered a husky dog was crushed by a python last year in the same area despite the owner's attempt to save it";

Cool story, but what i find worrying is that she lost a dog in the same park to a python the year before- its probably the same python in this attack, either that or this is more than one python lurking in the park :ninja: ...

incredible story, although you'd think they'd move the python after the first attack, what if it was a child instead of the dog :crazy:

She didn't lose a dog in the park before, someone else did. She remembered a husky being killed last year, it doesn't say it was hers ;)

I'm not sure how common pythons are in Hong Kong, could it not be possible that it's a different snake? I do agree however, that after an attack like this the park should be searched for the python so it can be re-homed to somewhere where it posed less danger to children.

It doesn't mention what type of dog she had, but as she says a small child would weigh less than her dog, I assume it isn't a small species of dog. It is a scary thought because it could easily have been a child... I wonder if the last accident the previous year got reported to the local council and if they did try to do anything about it.

WHAT is a python doing in a park?? Maybe its native to the area (I kinda doubt it???) but if not, I say it needs to be moved! Where, I dunno... anyone want a python?

good for her, i dont care about any replies that follow about animal instincts and hunting for their food etc..... i would have waded in there as well and wouldnt have just kicked and punched it. it should be caught and put somewhere where its not a further risk to humans and their pets, and before anyone starts saying that a human wasnt attacked, it wouldve been if it was the nearer the snake than the dog.
