High Nitrate

I have a 350l marine tank with sump, its about 1 year old and have just tested it and found to have high Nitrate, the sump has a refuge compartment with some algae that i can't pronounce all i know it is the most common type.

Any ideas to lower please.

The nitrats are 50mg

If you do a 50% water change it will in theory halve the nitrate level.

If you then do 20-30% weekly water changes it will gradually decrease.

The 50% water change is a bit of a pain but trust me it's worth it - I'm new to marines and also battling this problem but slowly starting to win!

My display tank is empty at the moment - courtesy of marine ich, I will take advantage of this however to improve the water quality for when I move them all back.
