Is your tank cycled? Since you have experience of tanks I'm assuming you know about cycling, but I understand that with marine tanks the live rocks etc. cycle the tank for you before you add the fish. With fresh water you have to actually cycle the tank either by adding some hardy fish, or by adding a substitute for fish ie. fishless cycling.

If you are not familiar with cycling a freshwater tank, please follow the link in my sig and read my article. This is very important as its the main reason newbies lose fish.
