Hi there,

Bit new to tropical fish keeping (matter of months) and already I'm having problems. The tank (2ftby1ft) is filling up with black furry algae? I clean it out regularly and have tried lessening the hours of light and feeding them less etc. Anyone got any ideas on where I'm going wrong?

(There are only guppies adn tetras in the tank with plants)

New tanks are often subject to algae until things settle and find balance.
Do you have real plants in there ? If they are real, it might be due to insufficient nutrients and also light.
Do you feed your plants (with liquid plant food) ?

Thanks for your response The plants are real and I don' tthink that's the problem as it's only recently this has started to happen. Think I'll do a nitrate etc test and see what that says. Trouble is because I don't know much about fish I'm not even sure about what to narrow the possibilities down to!
