Hi there to you all, I use to keep Marine fish an as have no time to keep them so I disided to move on to a Tropical Tank.

I would like a little advise on a suitable substrate as I would like to do a well planted Tropical Tank.

My Tank size is a 4-2-2 with sump.

So please an advise would be great.

Thanks :good:

I believe sand and plants go well, although you can buy special plant substrate if you wanted to go down that route, best ask in the planted tank section you might get a more specialised response

sand as a substrate (or gravel etc) will only be useful as an anchor for the plants, other than that it is dead & provides little nutrients.

Water column can be dosed directed with ferts to feed the plants, in which case they can be planted in anything. Can be quite high maintenance though.

If using sand alone, root tabs can be used.

A commercial substrate for that sized tank can be upwards of £150 (shocking I know).

Or you can make your own substrate if you're brave enough for under £20 (if that).

just go to aquaessentials.co.uk and they have all kinds of normal and plant substrates. i,d recommend 50:50 laterite:fine gravel.
or all plant substrate or mix 2 or three different types of plant substrates.

Hay there guys. Thanks for all the advise.

I think I know what I have to do :). Im ganner go with a Tetra Plant substrate an Sand.

1 Last thing if poss please . How do you upload pics to this site ?

Thanks.

the only way i know how to do it is..you have to have a photobucket account (or something similar) and upload your pics onto there. then copy the image code and paste it onto your new post. it will show the code but once you submit the post it will come out as pics
