Serpae tetras need more than 10 gallons and they should be in schools of at least 5

What other fish are in the tank? Are there any new additions which might be bothering the tetras? And The-Wolf has probably answered your question already. They are a schooling fish that grow shy when not in schools of at least five, usually even more is better.

Schooling fish not kept in groups can be very unpredictable, and their behaviour can change from hour to hour, it is a sign of stress.

nothing new been the same for ages it has 4 rummynose tetras in
and a killfish and platy
