I saw some of these fish in an aquarium in a book. They look very strange but very attractive. However I found they they were not very suitable for aquaria as they grow very large and require cooler water. Also I understand that they may be endangered. Does anyone have any experience with these fish? (Have never seen them for sale)

Yes they can reach up to 12 inches, however, they are equally adapt to both cold and tropical water although they prefer it on the cooler side, they are often sold as tropical fish. :) I kept one in a coldwater tank for some time they are very slow growers but still reach their full size, great fish that I will try again, I don't think they are on the endangered list.

I see these for sale occasionally at my local Petsmart, they're always in the goldfish section. Looked up info on them one time,as I thought that they were a good looking fish I might want to try. Sorry, can't remember where I read this, but said that as the fish grows they eventually lose the contrasting patterns and turn a grayish color, not very attractive. I never have gotten around to trying one of them ( don't know if I intend to ) so can't give you much more info than that.
