First of all I like to say hi

Now bear with me I bet you have been asked these questions loads of times

As I,m sure you will all guess I,m new to the site and the marine side of fish keeping. First of all my tank is a Aqua one UFO700 (corner unit with trickle filter and lighting in the hood).

1st Question the lighting that came with the tank is 2 x 10000k and 1 x 15000k 23 1/2 inch tubes with a water depth of 500mm Oh and my 5 blue LED night light bargain of Ebay :hyper: . Will this be ok to keep about 15 to 20 inches of fish, live rock clean up crew shrimp, couple of small hermit crabs and a few snails and eventually a few soft corals .

I have found a site that tells me a bit more about the lights and the tube upgrades if these would be more suitable your advise would be much appreciated . boy did that site take some finding

2nd Question with Ive been reading is live rock is very benificial to salt water tanks is it best to fill it with just live rock or normal rock sea rock with just some nice well covered live rock placed on the sea rock and let the spread of wild life from rock to rock happen more natual over a period of time. I have learnt from my fresh water tank that patience is a good thing but how does this stuff spread

Thanks for any help in advance Regards Gaz.

how many litres or gallons is the tank
also marine is diffrent to freshwater you do not have the inch per fish rule it is totalty diffrent as you cannot know until youve thought of somefish for your stockist and we can decide on that (make sense?) are you keeping corals are your lights t5s or t8s?
what filters are ou running?

The tank is rated as 175 litres I,m not sure about the bulb type as the aqua one site isn,t very pacific on this I have hunted high and low on thier website and the instructions but can,t find any thing about the type of lights . The filter is a pump that sits in the water with a tube that sits in the tank pull the water up to the top over mesh then wool and carbon on one side and biological media on the other which the water runs over and then comes through hole at the bottom of the lid and cascades back into the tank a bit like a waterfall ( if that makes sense  )

Well, 20watt lights are usually a T8 tube. Look at the light tubes themselves. On one side near the pins, it should be branded with something that reads "F20T8". This code indicates the bulb's wattage and the diameter.

I'll second what lee said, there's no inch per gallon rule in the complicated saltwater world. Compatibility, open swimming room, tank length, and waste are of big concern in the saltwater system. I'd suggest reading up on fish you might like and then coming back and asking about them and thier suitability for your tank directly :)

I was looking at an Allens damsel a pair of black and white clown fish a goby, but not quite sure which one and a firefsh maybe, From what I,ve read these are more for beginners like my self.

I have looked on the tubes already installed in my aquarium and all they have on them is Atman 10000k 20w super light. there is two of these which is a white light and the middle one says Atman 15000k 20w tri-power light which is more of a sunbed bulb colour  . Thats all they say on them I have the metal ends to see if there any thing stamped in the metal aswell  There isn,t any reflectors on them neither the bulbs have standard starters as used in office ligths. I assume these are standard lighting not T5s so would these be OK for soft corals and invertabrates or will I need to upgrade to T5s

I had a look on the Aqua one site and can,t find any thing on there that is helpfull either.

What would be the correct way for the marine ligthing 2 whites and one atanic blue or visa versa.

Cheers Gaz.

Yeah, softies and most inverts should be fine with those lights. Can you measure or approximate the diameter of the tubes? T8s are 8/8ths of an inch, while T5s are 5/8ths of an inch ;).
