Hello everyone, well i've packed up the bettas and i would like to try something new and BIG. I've been advised a Polypterus Delhezi would be good in my 30 gallon tank and i will keep him as a only fish. He will have a HOB filter rated for 20 gallons on one end and a fluval1+ and a sponge filter on the other side :) i have 2 bits of bogwood i can put in for him and im thinking of some REALLY long plastic vallis type plants that they have at my lfs. So they will go up and then cover a bit of the surface. But enough so the Delhezi can still get to the surface to breathe :)

Anything else i should know?

let your heater hang without attaching it to the glass so they dont get stuck

I would have imagined delhezi would get too big for a 30g, and you'd be better off looking at a senegal bichir. I've seen quite a few posts recently stating that they're the only bichir suitable for a 30g.

Apparently the footprint of my tank is ok? its going to be an only fish if that helps? :/ im gtting it at 4" so plenty of time to grow and get a new tank if needed :)

P.delhezi reaches around 15" full grown so a 36" long tank isnt really suitable for life, as said a senegal would be a better option, there are other small bichirs but they are not that easy to come by.

Palmas Pollis(not sure if i got that right, but Marbled Bichirs) are good...

they are slightly smaller than senegals if im correct, but harder to come by...

I wanted a Delhezi as well, but the ones in the LFS I had seen were sold, and some had died. I had reserved one over the phone a week before, but the lad I spoke to was a little 'thick' :sly: and reserved an ornate, the fool! I wasn't happy.

I ended up with a Polypterus Senegalus, they are great fish, and Pollis are amazing, if I'm right they are the ones that look like vipers (snake) but green? I could be wrong.

You could try some of the dwarf snakeheads, such as the rainbow (I've just ordered one) as you are keeping it as a single fish there would be no problems with it eating the other fish, lol.
They are prettier than senegalus too, as senegalus are many grey, which a hint of black spots along their lateral lines when younger.

In a 30gallon you could add something else with a Senegalus, like a plec. BN are suggeste, I've kept mine with a BN and now lives with a L001, with no probs.

There are plenty of larger tank mates you can try, as long as they are over 3" and deep bodied you can keepp them with Senegalus as they wont eat them :D

hope this helps,
