Cooking - keeping rock in a no light tub with circulation and prefferably a skimmer. You can cook rocks to get rid of any light using algea, let bacteria naturally clean over saturated rocks and just prepare new live rock for your tank. Warning, this will kill All light loving critters and if enough time goes by some of the non light loving critters (so if your getting rock to enjoy hitchhickers this is not for you). If the rock is especially dirty, you may have to do some waterchanges and heavy skimming at first.
Cooking should not be confused with baking a rock in the oven (which isn't always as silly an idea as you may think), because cooking rocks lets bacteria do the work and really clean out the anaerobic centers. You know your rock is done cooking when it stops shedding detrius to the bottom of your tub.
