hi

i have one of those plastic hexagonal tanks lying around with the black plastic base and top. it has an undergravel filter. i'm not sure the capacity, maybe 4 gal?

i wouldnt imagine i'd be able to keep many fish in there but wanted some suggestions.

i'm not sure whether tropical or coldwater would be best either.
any suggestions!?

G

It would have to be cold water, because a heater would melt the plastic

I think a betta would do very very well in a four gallon hex :D

my betta hexes are about 9" x10" and they're 2 gallons, I dunno if that helped any :*)
In my experience, I've found that hexagons (large) are eye pleasing but in reality...useless,there's absolutely no floor space ,and they're really only appropriate for a few different kinds of fish

mines the larger kind of hex.

think it is 4 gal.

will a betta, thats a fighter right? do well in an unheated hex? the room it would be in is very warm anyway! i think the heater in my main tank even comes on!

Is it plastic or acryllic??? If you could get a heater you get a couple of puffers for it :p Not that I'm biased at all...

i dont' use heaters in any of my betta tanks, they stay at room temp. and there are small heaters you can get for that tank, just place them carefully so they don't actually touch the plastic.
a betta would be fine in there by the way.

cool...

yeah i'm liking that idea.

sounds more interesting than a goldfish!

do they have any prefences? like food? water type?

bettas are pretty hardy, just use a water conditioner like with other fish. they eat betta food, usually either a little round pellet (size of a fish eye), or bits (you'll usually find the food right with the bettas), andthey like bloodworms too. sometimes people have gotten them to eat flakes, but not often. my bettas came from two different stores, and the one will only eat one kind of food (what the store gave it),and the other two will only eat there other kind. you'll have to kind of try out stuff. oh, and give him some plants and some sort of hidey hole, they like "me time" now and again. :)

Are you talking about Betta' or Puffers??? I havent got a Betta yet (thats going in my next tank :p)

Puffers generally eat live or frozen foods, mine are fairly young and I feed them on frozen blood worm at the moment.. they go mad for it and their little pot-bellies afterwards are great  .. oh yeah snails are also a must for them

Water qualities, they're pretty adaptable to water conditions as long as there isn't any ammonia or nitrites in it.

will do.

i was refering to betta's sorry...

puffers do sound cool and cute too!

i'll make a decision once the tank is up and cycled.

oooooh, get a betta!!! They're awesome! Very people friendly, they actually pout if you don't stop by and say hello, they eat from your hand  ,and have an attitude, what more could you ask for in a fish
Ifyou have a larger tank up & running...take some gravel and tank water and voila! it's cycled and ready for your new little guy :D

A 4gallon would be wayy to small for a goldfish,,and goldfish seem to be there happiest with a friend....i agree with the majority betta :p
