Right firstly i have to defend by saying that i did search but found nothing as hex is under 4 words.

How do you properly calculate the volume of a hex tank either in cm/litres or inches/gallons im not fussed done it about 3 times and got 3 different answeres

Please help me its doing my head in :grr:

Ok, this SHOULD work, but no gaurentees....

Side = length of one of the six sides
Diameter = Distance between two parallell sides (not tip to tip)
Heigth = well, if this needs to be specified, fill a gallon bucket till the tank is full

3/2 x Side x Diameter x Heigth = Vol in cubic units (i.e. Inches cubed, cm cubed)

Or, if it's not too big then use a measuring jug to fill it up! Then just count how many litres/gallons (depending on what your jug has) it takes, it's the most accurate way to work it out i would have thought!

Just leave about 2 inches at the top unfilled to allow for space the gravel will take up.

If your measuring jug only has litres and you want to know gallons then either divide the litres by 4.54 for uk gallons or by 3.89 for US gallons

Hope this helps :D

If you want the actual formula used to calculate the volume of a hex tank (and who doesn't because hey, maths is fun!) here you go:

2.6 X length of one side squared X height = cubic inches inches in volume

Cubic inches / 231 = gallons

(the 2.6 is actually 3 X the square root of 3, divided by 2, which is a constant for figuring the area of a hexagon.)
