I was emptying my tank today and all of a sudden I noticed somthing!
There was a cory swiming around my tank!
Ah!
I bought him over a year ago, and I guess I forgot him.
I took aout all the plants, decoration, and about 5 pounds of gravel to make way for my new planted/test tank.
I need to get him some friends!
He's prolly very lonely.
I've had him for over a year, and I guess I forgot about him!
I dunno how he's alive, because he's not an algy sucker, and I prolly havent given him proper food for 6+ months.
I use to feed him these pellets all the time, but I guess UI ran out, and forgot to get him more, and since he was always hiding, I must've forgotten about him!
Funny the things that happen.

So my question is, how did he survive without ever having food?

Hi Ethos :)

I'm so glad you finally found him!

I would guess he lived on leftover food that the other fish missed. Corys do a lot of shuffeling around in the gravel looking for snacks. And indeed, he must have been lonely. He will love having some friends to play with when you get some. Be sure to watch how he acts when you put them in.

But, this is something you should consider a learning experience. If you had a fish in your tank for that long and didn't even know that it was in there, perhaps you aren't paying close enough attention to it. What if he hadn't been there? The food he ate might have gone bad and caused bacteria to grow that could have harmed your other fish.

What kind of a cory is he?

That is such a good but sad story. I am glad you found your corie, But I am sad you havent been giving him the care he needs for six month. I cant wait to hear how he does when he finally gets friends. That is the reason why he is hiding in the first place because they are only him. They like some buddies to swim with, I love watching my cories. I cant imagine having a tank without a few cories in it..

He had an albino with him, but the albino died, and he was all alone.
I'm going to get him food today after school, but I dunno when I'll be able to buy more fish.
I need to finish up my cichluid tank stocking before I start another project, and I just started this tank because my cichlid tank is slow moving.
And I dont think I forgot him completely, but if someone asked what was in my 10G, I wouldn't remeber to name him.
How many of him can fit in a 10G?

So let me get this straight- you had an albino cory, that went missing 6months ago, and now you have seen it 6months later- and the tank is 10gals. How do you lose a fish for that long in such a small tank  ?? Have you been to your latest opticions appointment? It just seems to me such a challenge to lose a fish for that long in such a small tank, i see my fish almost every day even in my 50gal tank including my corys.

I must admit i too sit and stare at my fish for hours on an evening, while im watching tv :D I know just by looking at them all, that there all there and present, its a shame really that you did forget about your little cory, im just glad hes ok *phew* and maybe you will keep a better eye on him this time??

C x :*

Agreed, it is certainly worrying that someone doesnt bother to check on their fish to know if they are alive or not in a 10Gallon.

I regularly check on all my fish, to make sure there is no disease, and to make sure they all look as if they are eating.

If you can forget about a fish then you are obviously not hugely bothered about it...

Sorry if this is a misconception, but this is what it sounds like to me.

Well, I never completely forgot about him.
My tank was very heavely decorated, and since I moved out of that room, and rearley was ever in there (only to feed them) its not like I sat and ever watched it.
For a few weeks, maybe 2 months (I excagerated a little) I never saw it, except at night when I feed them.
I agree, it was irreasponsible. But when you have a tank thats puxshed into a corner, and you dont pay attetion to it, its pretty easy for you to miss one fish.
I had plans to get him more friends earliy on, but I got my 55G, so I was completely distracted.
I'm redoing the tank right now, and if I decided not to get him friends, he's going back to petco.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm I have 2 tanks, and one is bigger, newer and alot nicer to look at, but this doesnt mean, that i neglect my smaller tank, in fact i look at them both just as much as each other lol.....

Yeah how could you miss him because I also have cories in my 10g and I have two of them in their and their is no way I wouldn't be able to see him since they are bigger than the other fish in their and they even come out during the day looking for food and eating the flake food that falls to the bottom of the tank when the other really small fish can't get the whole flake in his mouth.
