Thanks For that Jamie,It appears That what You Have To Do Is Run A Whole gambit Of Measures to outwit The Birds.I Look forward to the Challenge and Hope That I 'm able to Keep them from Eating my sacred fish -Cheers-Alec s

This may start some flame, But my father uses a BB gun, Powerful enough to hurt them. It's not me that does this so don't flame :)

here are a couple simple ways to keep them away:

Fishing line method:
herons don't land directly in the pond - they land on the ground and walk into the pond. If you string fishing line around the parameter of the pond (using stakes about 1ft high?), it should keep them out.

Black lab method:
we have a big black lab who likes to chase the herons away and maybe get the occasional mouth of feathers

Deep pond method:
basically just make the pond deep enough so the herons can't stand in the pond. This method works the best in my opinion, but I guess it's not always an option with smaller ponds,etc...

BB Gun method:
:shifty:

Shotgun. o_O?¿?¿ What kind of Heron? Just get a pit bull or something.
Your post bothers me... The way that sounds its like you think pitbulls are mean and will attack the heron right off. Way to put down this breed. This is why people don't like them, bad rep.

BB gun, shotgun, dogs

Some people may want to check a few wildlife laws! In many areas certain types of herons(great blue herons in my area) are a federally and state protected bird. Even doing something that could cause them harm may carry some hefty fines and even pets(dogs) can be removed or the owners fined for causing them harm or disturbing them.

P.S. I think they are a large problem for pond owners and feel you should be able to do what you will to control them killing your fish and in the future my fish :hey: even if some may disagree.

Lol, I am aware there may be laws regarding the protection of birds. I'll be damned if I'd just let one wander in and start messing up my pond and forcing me to put in a ton of effort to keep it away. Killing the thing and burying it is so much easier, and no one would ever know......
I don't have a pond and I haven't shot any birds but still.

Aim high, less feathers to pick up :ninja:

pellet gun,
1: no evidence you shot it
2: you didn't take a innocent life
3: after feeling that, it wont be back for a wile
4: a quick meal isn't worth being shot so he wont come back
5: no feathers to pick up
6: no blood trail.

thats 6 quick reasons to use a pellet/BB gun.
