Have you ever thought that, with all the lighting, filtration equipment, food, heating, aquarium decoration that you've probably got £100 of equipment guarding just £20 worth of fish.... :D ;)

Adding it up for my 18g...

Tank, filter and hood- £30
Heater- £15
Deco + plants- About £10
TOTAL- £55

Fish-
4xf/m bettas- £12
6 neons- £5
3 cories- £4
2 honey gouramis- £3
TOTAL-£24

Not much difference really.

it also depends on fish.

the bigger uncommon fish can sometimes be 100 or more espsh the lnumber plecs..

it also goes on what products you buy eheim cost more then fluvals same goes for tanks.. i use bogstandard tanks.. not them with a name..

Right now I have about $140 - new hood, lights, CO2, heater, filter(without the tank/stand) on $31 worth of fish. However, if I add the potential cost of the fish that were born in my tank (6 barbs @ $4, and 7 platties @ $3 = $45) then I have $76 of fish. So it's about 2:1

erm...the amount of fish ive murdered oer the past 2 years i proberbly could buy both my tanks again!!!!!!

I'll try it with one of our catfish & comunity tanks:
tank, hood, lights & internal filter: £200
External canister filter: £80
Decor, substrate plants etc: around £100

total: £380 (plus food costs, metered water, elecricity & replacement filer media etc)

Fish (including 9 L-number species): around £350
Hmm, that balances out not too badly.

How about Martha's tank?

tank, hood, lights & internal filter: (if bought new) £400
External canister filter: £130
Decor, substrate plants etc: around £100

total: £630 (plus food costs, metered water, elecricity & replacement filer media etc)

Fish:
Martha: £12
Stewart: £10
Broccoli: £50
Julian: £27

Total: £99

So how come we prize the hundred quid of fish in Martha's tank abouve the £350 of fish in the community tank?

Of course it works the other way too: (non-fish example)

Total cost of building our aviary: £300
Total value of the birds living in it: £3200

Meep!

200 gallon tank and covers: £255
3x External canister filters: £225
Heaters: £50
Lights: £50
Powerheads: £40
Decor: £300?

Total: £920

Fish: Based on curent retail values roughly £1000

A lot depends on if you buy new equipment, nice Eheim cannisters, commercially made stands & such.

used 20 tall $12
used hob filter $3
heater $15
wood to build stand $15
small piece of light panel for top $1
water $1?
total of $47
I keep 40-50 dime size angels in here, I get $1.50 each for, they get sold for $5 each, so call it $60 of fish for me, maybe $250 in fish for the lfs.

I set up a 65 gallon show tank around a year ago, spent around $650 for equipment & materials to build the stand & hood. Spent around $30 or so for fish, many have grown out. 7 adult angels, they go for around $40 each, 2 albino bristlenose, around $25 each, 6 panda corys, around $6 each, around $366 in fish.

I think a lot depends on what you want to accomplsh, & how cheao you want to be.

Many marine tanks contain $10000 or more worth of livestock. Of course, once you have that much livestock, you should probably spare no expense in their life-support equipment.

The fish in my 10 gallon tank were all free, so I have an equipment to fish ratio of roughly infinity.

urm well my community tank....

Ehiem tank with lighting, ext filter, heater stand- £530
say about £70 on plants sand etc

£600..

with 11 L-numbers they come to £280
add another £50 for bits and bobs in there so aorund £330.

I'll puit it down to being a brand new tank though that comes complete with a Ehiem Pro 2 filter.

on the other hand though there's my big oddball tank...
tank and sump 2nd hand £150
Lighting £100
Stand £70
pumps £150
Media £20
decor £50 (gotta love working in a LFS getting wood dirt cheap...)

£540 total

then just 1 fish in that tank would cost more than that bought from a shop!!

without the arowana in the equation my fish come to aorund £300.

Sir your example with Martha is a bit off i reakon, although going by prices of what you paid on the fish there worth alot more now.

come to think about is though I'm spending about £600 on a set up for cookie and you got him for free

although going by shop prices on my Lizard set up they work out about equal while there still small but once they start growing the price tag shoots up.

you must have a lot of birds Sir, my budgies are worth about £15 and there cage...pfft £5??

lol here's a good one non fishy....you pay say £50 for cat yet the house costs hundreds of thousands

my main tank has 200 dollars in fish and 400 in equipment, finding, researching, having, adjusting, and maintaining, the equipment is half the fun

ooh asian arrows those are cool, super reds are some 35000 around here and i'd be hard pressed to setup a tank that expensive

Tanks, Equipment etc......£500+++

Fish, Food etc.................£200+++

Enjoyment.....................PRICELESS

:D
