:/ Well here we go again. I lifted up the tiny door to feed one of my plakats who was obviously hungry. He came sailing out of the hole and landed in the sink 2 feet away!!!! He flopped around there until I could get something to put him in and get him back in the tank. Mind you he landed in chlorinated water. Keeping my fingers crossed as he was the next up for breeding.

I'm so sorry Nashnut. I hope he's ok.

Mind you it was the little lid on the mini bow plus my hand was in the way. He actually hit me going past!!

Well he did come up from the bottom and eat. Yesterday was a fast day and I don't think he likes them.

I hear ya, my bettas hate fast day with a passion. Hunding looks at me like this :-( and asks me "Was I a bad boy?" "What did I do wrong?"

But, they do better for it. They have two fast days spread in the week.

I'm glad he's eating.

Eeeep. Poor fella.
You seriously fast your bettas?? I never have. Can't say they seem better or worse for it. They have had the odd day forced on them due to me being away overnight or ill or some such but not regularly.
Hugs,
P.

I usually fast them after they have had bloodworms. I seem to have all sorts of problems when I do feed them bloodworms so I let them clear out a day. I give them three each and usually one comes down with a bacterial infection/dropsy. Only the older fish though. My spawn is fine with them. Can't figure that out.
The females stuff themselves and nothing happens.

Yes, I fast my fish. The day before a fast, I feed them something very high in fiber, like peas or daphnia, then they fast the next day. It's like cleaning the pipes out and then the next day they get a high protein food, like bloodworms or brine shrimp, so there's something to look forward to. This also helps keep the snail and planaria population in my planted tanks down. Fish can go for up to a week without food. Not that this is great to practice, nor have I tried this, but just some information in case you need to know.

I have one of those mini bow tanks to. He was able to fly through that tiny opening and land 2ft away in the sink?! Wow thats amazing, sad but amazing.

I couldn't believe it. I felt him brush past me but thought he fell back in. I wasted time checking out the tank, then the sink, then the tank.... nothing so I started moving things in the sink and there he was.... inches from the drain. I can't believe he jumped that FAR!!!!

Thanks, I did know that but tis ok. :) Mine get fed blood worm and brine shrimp live usually once or twice a week. I somtimes do peas too although not as often I suspect I should. They've never required a good clean out. Seem capable of doing that themselves. I will say I do stop feeding any that look like they've totally overindulged but the boys never look that way. And the girls share with a fair few others including veggie type fish so the variation in their diet is huge. Even so, on the days I do miss out one of the two daily feeds I find the catfish get very upset, as does Ollie. And being that the girls live with my largest syno means they nibble food he gets given and doesn't munch immediately. Or the plecs food. He also gets grumpy if he hasn't gotten enough so they don't really ever miss out in the end.
Hugs,
P.

I'm still trying to figure out how he came thru that small opening with so much speed that he went that far. I looked in the tank, couldn't find him, looked in the sink, nothing, looked back in the tank, nothing, and then started moving things in the sink. Then he wouldn't stay still until I got something. He was jumping around, into the container - then out....

Woah, sounds like he's quite the jumper!!! Good thing you found him in time, I imagine he'll be just fine

What brand of bloodworm do you use? If not Hikari, maybe you should try them... their frozen foods are guaranteed to be sterile, I think. All I know is that I've found some odd things, like small dragonfly larvae, in other brands before, but never in Hikari.

I don't fast my bettas on a regular basis, just give them peas once a week. The only time they ever get fasted is if I'm sick or have had a really rough day and just don't feel like doing anything. No problem so far, knock on wood! :)

It is Hikari but the problem is that I must mail order them and they arrive cold but not frozen. They love them, but I just don't trust them. I had the same problem with black worms. I kept them cold, rinsed them daily and rinsed what I was feeding twice. Still had problems. I only feed them a couple... bloodworms 3.
I can't figure it out.

I feed bloodworms sparingly too. They used to be a more regualr thing for my fish. But I suspect they may have been the cause of the large number of fish I lost second quarter of this year.
