I'm growing an herb and vegetable garden, and after rooting some cuttings in water for friends who want to grow herbs, I was wondering whether or not I could root some herbs and put them in the tank with my Bettas. They're not sprayed or treated with chemicals, and I grew them from seed. What I do is cut a stem from the plant and put it in water until it grows roots-- then it can be planted. Couldn't I do the same for my Bettas, but not plant them of course? I have an endless supply, and could change them very frequently, as soon as I have some cuttings started. I just don't know which herbs might be okay for them or, conversely, which may affect them in a negative manner.

I have: parsley (straight and curly), sweet marjoram, cilantro, borage, dill, chives, greek oregano, peppermint, spearmint, thyme, sage, and basil. Uhm... I think that's it. I'm not growing lettuce due to space restrictions. :)

Anyone?

The thing about herbs is some of them are used for medicine and pesticides. Like the spearmint and peppermint I grow that to keep ants away. A lot of the herbs have natural oils that will mess up the water as well.

I personally wouldn't plant something I was going to eat in a fish tank, but that's just me...

Heh heh... nor would I. I would make rootings just for them, SoCalMom. We culture worms, don't we? I have more in my garden than I need, and give plenty away, but this would be just for them, and "cultured" indoors.

Yes, that's what I was asking about-- whether anyone knew which hydroponic herb-plants might be okay for fish! I wouldn't think of the mints, personally, but I'm not sure parsley would be so bad, because it's mild and leafy, and thyme loves to root all along the stem. I know that we put almond leaves in the tanks; perhaps somebody knows which herbs might actually be good for them. :)
