I have one Betta and 2 Ghost-Shrimp in a 1,7 Gallon-Tank! Since the Tank is not fully cycled yet I do some Water-Change everyday with treated water! So far the Nitrate, adn Nitrite-Levels have been great and I got even rid of the Cat-Pee-Smell that lingered after the first couple of days, Ammonia-Test is almost down to cero! I was shocked when I checked the levels again and both nitrate and nitrite where out the roof, Ammonia still almost down at cero!!!! How come? I used to have 8 Ghost-Shrimps with the Betta and I didn't get bad readings like that! Even after a almost 50% Waterchange today, the readings hardly improved. Lucky me got a tuff Betta in there and Ghost-Shrimps! What can I do!

You said that you're tank is not fully cycled yet? Then a nitrite spike is a good thing :D . First you get the amonia spike, then nitrite spikes and amonia drops to zero..then nitrate spikes and nitrite drops to zero.. and then you're done!! :p

Keep doing water changes to reduce the stress on your fish and hang in there!

good luck

And yes, my tank is not fully cycled yet! Because I know first I had a problem with the bad smell, like Cat-Pee, but that went away, and then all of the sudden those two levels went up! Well actually the Nitrate is only up to 20 (on the tester are three spots for "save" levels, it is the middleone)- the Nitrite is the one that is on absoulute maximum. So is that still good? My Betta seems to be doing fine and his two Shrimpies are doing well, too!
