I need to know how long my fish can make it if the power is out for an extended period of time. I cannot take them anywhere with us and we really should evacuate.

Help!!!

How many fish, what size tank?

In a lightly stocked tank, you should be able to go 2 days without a problem, 4-5 with some aeration (ie, a battery powered bubbler).

see my quote...

The tank is 55 gallons... it is heavily aerated as is while its running so I'm sure the oxygen levels will be high.

My Mac has a UPS unit on it may be I will shut it off before we lose power and conserve it to run the protein skimmer (sea clone)after the first day and hopefully that will give it a boost.

Or would it be better to use the air pump with an air stone.

Keep in mind the UPS will probably only run for 30 minutes or so.

I dont know what to tell ya :( . Im in Lake Mary and we will still get some rain, wind, and hopefully not any tornados but its possible. I hope you guys in Tampa make it out ok. Good Luck.

Thanks man... we should be getting some of it in about 1-2 hours

Sorry--I didn't have the signatures displaying, since some take up most of a screen! :)

The only one I would really worry about is the tang. They tend to react poorly to any change in the tank. Everyone else should be okay. I would also remove any macroalgaes, and make sure there isn't any green algae growing anywhere, as both of these will burn oxygen in darkness, reducing what's available for the fish.

I wouldn't count on the UPS to last for long--IME, they tend to run equipment for less than 30 minutes. The intent is to give someone enough time to save their files and turn the computer off safely, not run the machine for a few hours.

In the long run, you might want to consider getting a small generator. I know they are costly, but when I figured out how much money I had sitting in glass boxes, it became an insurance investment for me.

Yea right now it appears the hurricane is going to come right through Orlando and I hope power doesnt go out more than 2 days.
