One of my black platies is very skinny (compared to the other) around his abdomen. I'm not sure what's wrong..Acouple days ago he was swithching between the bottom of the tank, and sitting at the top, not eating or swimming around. Now, he's eating a little, and he's in the middle of the tank, swimming a little more. Every once in a while he twitches and every couple hours he'll flick himself against a rock. Could it be a parasite? There is nothing attached to him, which is one thing my book on diseases told me to look for in the case of fish lice. MAybe it's a skin fluke? I'm not sure exactly what that is based on the description...he has lost a couple scales (2 or 3 at most), or that's what it looks like ( this happened to my other platie (the scale loss) when I just got him, but he recovered). Maybe it has something to do with a couple plants I added about a week ago (my first live plants :D )Does anyone know how to treat this????.... I hesitate to put one in quarantine in my 2.5 gal mini as it has no heater :-( ......Thanx for any suggestions!!!!!

 If there is no obvious signs of disease or parasites I would not use any chemical meds, they can do more harm than good. Melafix made by API is a tea tree oil based additive that makes a good pick me up when you are not sure what you are dealing with, just check the back of the bottle to make sure its ok to use with the stock in your tank. Are your other fish all ok?

I would add some salt also, if you don't have any catfish that is (salt can be bad for them). It would be best if you could also quarantine the fish. The salt won't harm your platies (they cope quite well in salt)....but if it is a parasite it may actually help!!

Good luck

Ive got some salt in my tank, already B) , and he seems a little better  ? Should I put in a little more salt?

Well, he's eating more, and he's not flicking his body against rocks any more as far as I can see :D :) :p :fun: :hyper: ....I hope he's okay now, but Im not sure what came over him there, hopefully it doesn't come back
