Having a few probs, lost 4 fish last night.

One of them was a shark, I had 2 of them and they had both been swiming visiously against and into the side of the tank, one of them is still alive but one of its eyes is really big and looks like its got a fury film over it and its still swiming visiously-can anyone explain?

When i took the tank over from a previous tennant, they told me they hadnt looked after it well. I have done a few water changes and put the correct filtration in as it had the wrong sponges. I am wondering if these deaths may have somthing to do with the fish's poo. Everytime I move anything or if the fish are sifting thro the stones, loads of what i belive to be poo, gets thrown up. I tryed to get rid of some of this by using a hover but it didnt seam to pick much up. I think the gravel is the wrong type as it looks like the stuff you would use on a driveway - all course and sharp.
To try and stop any more deaths, I have cleared the tank of the gravel, on doing so, so much "poo" got thrown up that I couldn't see the back of the tank, I let it settel a bit and then used a bit of hosepipe to siphon the "poo" off the bottom of the tank, I also changed 40% of the water.
Is this likely to be the cause of the deaths, as Ive heard that the "poo" gives off amonia??
Do you think the other sharks likely to die and should I expect any more deaths?
What sould I do for a short term and long term fix?
oh ..and Ive just been treating white spot if that makes any odds.

Cheers

:fish: Sounds like you have removed all the good bacteria when you changed the sponges, you should only change part of the sponge at a time to retain as much good bacteria as possible.
Your tank will now go through a cycling process to grow the bacteria, you will need to get some testing kits for
nitrate
nitrite
ammonia
When your tank is cycled ammonia should be 0- nitrite should be 0 and nitrate as near to 0 as you can keep it.
test your water to find out what the parameters are and do frequent water changes as needed to dilute the toxins.
Do not feed your fish for 3/5 days, if you must feed them give them about one quarter of the amount you normally feed.
Using a gravel vac regularly will help to keep the base clean :D
