anybody know a catfish that changes the ph surrounding it?

orange shark

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure there are no fish that change the PH of the water around them (at least not to any noticable degree).

its completely flat and is an ambush predator, it also changes the ph around it (but i dont no by how much!)

whats the name of the catfish and do you have any pictures of it. i've never heard of anything changing the Ph in its tank, but I have heard about some fish secreting poisons into the water.

Catfish Like Bogwood and Bogwood will most definately change the PH of the h2O.!!

Chaca chaca or frogmouth catfish is the fish known to lower the pH of the water it is in.

Awww, thats not very nice now is it :( Actually it is believed it is a product of their extreemly strong digestive acids being released into the water but no one really knows why it happens.

Wasnt there research done, with a conclusion that the acid it produces is because of there piscivorous diet? The Chacas need these acids to destroy the sheer ammount of bones and other "though to digest" bits.

But so do other catfishes that swallow their prey whole, like gulper cats and most other large Auchenipterids but these dont have any effect on their surrounding water.

Not nice but then looking at them, they aren't nice looking either. They look like the kind of fish you don't want to meet alone in an alley at night.

Hmm, very true...Maybe this is one for the scientific forum...

Its an interesting topic. I wonder how these fish have those heavy acids and other predators dont. I wonder if they have the same acids but on a much weaker scale
