Have noticed the last couple of days that I have large amount of white appearing on some of my live rock, I presume this is just something growing? but its starting to worry me now, I have enclosed a pic but it isnt very clear. I have only had the live rock in since sunday and my readings on weds night were

PH - 8.2
Am - 0.25
Nitrite - 0.25
Nitrate - 20
SG 1.023

Any suggestions?

It looks asthough your corralline algae is dying off. This happens sometimes when you cycle your tank. I presume your cycling with those readings?

It should grow back at the end of your cycling period when params become stable, and there is sufficient levels of dissolved calcium and lighting.

Yes I am cycling, do you think my lighting needs adjusting? i was wondering about changing the bulbs

What kind of lights are you using now? Live rock doesnt need tht much light, You will have die off in the beginning, but like miagi32 said it will all grow back after the cycle is over.

will be Corraline Algea - nothing to worry about IMO

As above, most likely coralline algae dieoff. The LR develops a thin coating of coralline algae and when 'traumatized/cycling/exposed to light' it will dieback and usually appears as a light white coating on the LR. Not to fear....totally normal. SH

ok......got a new thing today, hair like stuff growing at a rapid rate.....including on my live sand.....is this normal

This will be hair algae. You could risk getting some red hermit crabs and add them to the tank, they will happily eat the hair algae. But you want to control it now, DONT let it take hold. As you see it growing, remove it. Even if this means a twice daily clean.
