This is awful! I don't know what to do! My boy has been acting kinda strange. not eating much, staying on the bottom a lot.... and now I wake up this morning, and he is laying completely on his side, and his fins are significantly shorter. Since he started acting weird I did a water change added salt, and a tiny bit of melafix. Now I don't know what to do. he looks so bad, I'm afraid if I do a water change it will stress him so bad, and ultimitely lead to him dying. It was my most vibrant young boy too(see Kip in my sig)..... I have to leave to go to work, and won't be back here until tomorrow. I can't take him with me b/c he would have to stay in the car!! I don't know what to do! someone help me! Here he is.... I tried shaking his tank a little to see if he would swim and he wouldn't even get up! I'm afraid it's too late! :-(

Ok it's even worse than I thought...... I put him in a cup with his tank water and when I tried to net him he just lifelessly laid there, he's struggling to get up and swim, but just can't! Also once out of the water I noticed something strange! He's got this like white ring all the way around his neck??? And so does the boy in the 1 gallon tank below him??? I have no idea what this is, and it just appeared!!?? Someoen please help!!

I hate to say this but he's dying, sorry there is nothing to be done, the white ring round the neck is it a patch or does it look fluffy.

He may have fin rot, but that's not what has done this to him I don't think........ Wilder- it's hard to explain the white stuff...... It almost looks fuzzy, but then again it doesn't I don't really know. It's like nothing Ive ever seen on pictures here. It's more like a patch i think...... Is there anything I could use to cover a few possibilities of what it may be? I had to leave him at school~ :( I'm just hoping he passes before I get back tomorrow. I was sooo sad this morning, and just thinking about it kills me, but I know I need to figure out what it is that did this, so I can treat the other boy.

This is the problem with patches they can be bacterial or parasite, don't no your location but if in the us get him on some tetracycline fast, good luck.

I have tried all of my lfs's and NONE have tetracycline..... Is there anything else I can try to find?? :-(

I had to leave him at school :-( b/c I had to work all day an hour away from home and school, and I couldn't leave him in the car b/c of the heat. I'm headed back in a few, I'm just hoping he has passed away by the time I get back, b/c I can't stand to see him like that, and I just can't get myself to euthanize~ :( I'll update you when I get back, but now my other concern is what to get for my other boy who has the same patch on him??

Tetracycline is the antibiotic mix. It comes under some different brand names. It is about as broad an antibiotic base as can be gotten. In many contries it requires a scipt, but not in the USA.

Say a little direct one-on-one prayer. God knows exactly what it is, and he will get you the word you need to hear.

(Forgive me for being political :shifty: but our pets a worth a little un-PC-ness)

thanks everyone for all of your help. jollysue - What other names might I find it under?
Everyone say a little prayer for all of my fishies, it seems everything is going wrong all at once.

I think mardel do one who makes maracyn, sorry for your troubles.

Tetracycline
Manufacturer: Aquatronics
A broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacterial infections. For infections of fin and tail rot, frayed fins, popeye, inflamed gills, mouth and body open sores/ulcers, livebearer disease, dropsy, Columnaris, and secondary infections such as fungal. Specific for livebearers and goldfish. Aerate the aquarium well when using. Useful for the control of some common bacterial diseases, including Aeromonias and Pseudomonas Genera and the Mysobacterial group.

Well I just got back to school and sadly Kip passed away. And also Pedro looks TERRIBLE. here are pics! It almost looks like his scales are raising. I can't get any meds until tomorrow, he isn't acting any different so far, but his body looks awful! This took over in a matter of 2 days with him.

His fins also are really ragged looking today...... This happened overnight? This is so horrible to not know what to do!

He has DISEASE: DROPSY

bloated belly and raised scale = dropsy close up of raised scales

GENERAL INFO: This is a most common and most fatal betta disease. Very little is know about it, other than it is abdominal bloating and that the tissues of betta get filled with fluids. Some say it is contagious, other say it is not. All I know is that it has killed many bettas in my fishroom over the years and I have never EVER been able to save a single one of them. I treat it as a very contagious disease, since it is most fatal, and I don’t joke around with it.

SYMPTOMS: It is easy to diagnose a betta with Dropsy: Look for two signs: an abnormally big (bloated) belly and if you look at betta from the top, raised scales. Scales will look like an open pine cone. If you see this, you are out of luck, and so is Betta. He will soon go to betta heaven :((…
TREATMENT: No known cure. Keep water clean, keep him AWAY from any other bettas etc… You may try tetracycline if you catch it very early on. I always try something, just in case, though I have to yet found anything that will stop this horrible disease. It may take up to 15 days for betta to die, though usually about 5 days. Any betta with dropsy should be immediately ISOLATED!!!! Prayer may not hurt.
