hello,
I have a 125 gal tank with a 125npf sump tank and a 1090 gph semerged pump. i have a very hard time balancing the system out after water changes. is this pump to small or to big for my tank and filter system?, I also have a loud and annoying gurgling suction sound coming from the overflow. it sounds like a toilet flushing but constantly. and way to solve this?. replys are greatly appreciated. thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by balancing out the system after water changes???

As long as the tank volume is being turned over several times an hour the pump should be fine. However, the higher the water gets pumped up, the less pressure it will have. If the top of your tank is 6ft above the pump then the pump will push up less water than if the top of the tank was only 3ft above the pump. Most pumps will have a chart on the box they came in and the chart should show you how much water gets pumped at particular heights. Generally the higher the water goes, the lower the pressure.
Because your filter is making a lovely gurgling noise you probably have heaps of water flow from the pump. A smaller pump will put less water into the tank and reduce the noise. Some people try putting bends and pipes in the drain pipe but it doesn't always work.
You could put a T-piece and Tap in the return pipe from the pump. The outlet from this T-piece can go straight back into the sump and this would reduce the amount of water going back to the tank. It will reduce the filtration to a degree but would help reduce the noise. You can close the tap completely during the day when you are out of the house and open it a bit at night so it is quieter. Just make sure the tank continues to have some water flow through it at all times.
A coverglass on the sump will help reduce noise to some degree.
