hi there i live in the uk and i have a 22 gallon community tank and i have just tested my water and my ph level has rocketed to 7.8!!! My ammonia and nitrate levels are fine its just the ph level. How do i lower the PH?? I have some dirftwood and a few rocks in the tank if this helps. I asked my LFS and they suggested using boiled water in the tank. Would this do the trick and if so how much and how often.

Thanks for any replies.

Hi qprneil,

You say pH has rocketed to 7.8 - from what????

7.8 isn't exessively high

Is there anything different you've done to the tank recently???

Added any new decor???

You really need to establish what might have caused the increase -_-

Boiled water is a new one on me and I don't think it would have much of an effect.

There are products you can buy to adjust your pH but not a route I'd advise.....The most common natural way to lower pH is to use peat (though make sure it has no additives/chemicals in it) though this can colour the water. There is also peat available for the aquarium that won't colour the water peat granuals

But as said first try and establish what might have caused the increase ...

:)

agree with www that you need to determine what it was that caused the increase. also what are you housing in the tank? sorry if i missed it.

never heard of boiling water lowering the temps and do not think i would try that. may end up with fish stew  you can try some of the products on the market that are used to lower the ph or the peat method. like www said it will turn the water murky. you can also use baking soda. will not stain the tank. one more use for baking soda.
