We currently have 120 litre tank and by sunday should have had a 260litre (I think) delivered. How would you suggest as the least stressful way of transfering the fish? I was going to move new tank into position and remove all decoration from smaller tank and put majority of mature water into new tank. Then remove the filter sponges and rinse them with the new filter media in a bucket of existing tank water. I also have an additional internal filter I can transfer across. I was then going to put all fish into a covered bucket and move the rest of the water to the new tank. The new gravel would have been put in already, then top up new tank with tap water (prime added and at same temp). Run all filterd etc and then put in the fish. What's the chances of them being ok? Its no different to doing a 50% water change really is it? The fish we have a black spot barbs, red line torpedo barbs, some neons, corys and a apple snail. Any advice would be great

Thanks

All sounds good m8, but you could just add the full amount of water from your tap and not nother moving any existing tank water over. Thers no real beneficial bacteria in the water anyways.

thanks for that, I thought I had to try and keep as much of the same water as possible? It makes it easier if I dont have it though. Should I add anything (filter start?) to the new media as wee or do you think just rinsing them in a bucket of tank water with the old sponges will be good enough?

Thanks

If you have any picky fish, it might be worth keeping your water. I know that black neons are meant to be a bit fussy about large water changes (although I can't confirm this through first hand experience). Other than that, just run your old filter on the new tank alongside the new one if possible. the new filter should quickly be colonised with benificial bacteria. Failing that, just transfer as much of the media as you can spare to the new filter, if you need the old filter to remain on the old tank.

Thanks for the replies, tried to find out a bit more about the rena xp3 external filter that comes with the new tank, anyone had any experience with them?

No experience with the filter, but I would suggest using the older tank's water to move them across as it would help protect against pH shock etc, just a thought.
