Hi just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on lost fins, I came home from work today and my girlfriend noticed one of my mollies looked trapped and was dead, luckily she was not dead ad she was still breathing i let her loose from where she was trapped, but after less than a minute was up against the filter.

We noticed after we got her away from the filter and into a container within the tank that the fins on one side of her were really badly shredded - actually pretty much non existant now, I am assuming one or more of the other fish has had a go at them, she still seemed to have relativly good balance and swimming and probably the stress and exhastion caused her to get caught by the filter.

I have put food in the container and she has eaten. I intend to get a breeding net tomorrow and release her back into the tank in a few days if she looks any better

My question is will the fins regrow in anyway, will she adapt to the loss of the fins is there anything else anyone can suggest i can do short term , or is there little hope of her survival without these fins

Thanks

Yes, shredded fins will grow back. Keep her seperate for as long as it takes, and do frequent water changes. Clean water is the best thing to have for healthy healing. I don't use any additives when healing injured fish, I just make sure the water is pristine.

Nice to know for future fin damage thanks, unfortunately she died soon after being seperated. Maybe through tiredness/stress tying to get out, maybe there was something else wrong and she went there for peace and to die, i did not think it was a place any of my fish could get stuck but the way she looked it might have been.

she certainly showed no signs of anything being wrong over the last few days and apart from the fins. i could see no physical problems, i have wached the tank very carefully for 48 hours as another molly gave birth 2 nights ago and i managed to get 11 fry into a breeder net who are doing very well so far, so a few great days and one bad day, I guess it balances out a little
