Hi, turned on my lights to find they come on for 2 seconds, then just turn off again!! Any ideas why anyone? Is this the bulbs or the unit itself. Were working fine this morning when I had them on for tank maintenance.

Can only think of a couple of things:

Maybe try new starters?

If you manoeuvre the input wire at the point close to the light itself, does this make any difference?

Are they T5 or T8's?

What Jewel tank do you have? I have a spare T8 setup for a 260 bowfront if you live around the derby area. Also have a spare T8 for a 190 trigon.

Sounds like it may be the ballast but I am no expert

Ok, took the whole unit down, fiddled about and took the bulbs out, cleaned up the contact points and voila, working now, thanks :)

i know you said its working but you may have one of the faulty light units, is it T5s or T8s and how long have you had the unit?

They are T5's on a rio 400, exactly one year old too.

No red sticker truck.

Been fine since the other day.

oh ok, then as far as i know then yours will be fine.

i had T8s on my juwel rio 180 and they were from a batch that were faulty and water was getting into the light unit from condensation. shocking.

shocking, quite literally!

can i just ask whilst we're on the subject of dodgy Juwel light systems. I was having a chat with my mte at the LFS and he claims that the new Juwel double ballast hi-light system won't fail like the old system did/does, is this true?

couldnt tell you, i would never buy a juwel system again ever. thats my opinion.

Juwel tanks are the shizzle, they're some of the best tanks on the market, the lighting will be brilliant if you bought your tank after jan 2009 then all equipment should last as long as it should, however, if you bought the tank or equipment prior to jan 2009 then it will probably fail, the reason for this is that Juwel outsourced all equipment manufacture except tanks to china, anything made in china will probably fail, Juwel twigged and sourced manufacture back to germany, and the lighting units made in china have a red sticker on the underside, the ones made in germany have a blue sticker.

The tanks have always been made in Germany, using a very efficient production line, the quality control systems in place are very strict, to ensure quality equipment.

i disagree still.

I personally hate Juwel and i will only explain why if people wish to know of my experience with them but im not trying to use my reasons to convince others to stop using them

mine has the blue sticker and a massive emblazoned sticker saying 'MADE IN GERMANY'. Phew!

and i have had many cheaper tanks through my time and the Juwel tanks and cabinets are the best made i could find, other than the pure oak ones in Maidenhead. Some people have problems with the filter system and i can honestly say after upgrading the power head, i personally have no probs at all.

I bought the Juwel Rio 180 from my LFS, had it set up and running for about 8 months then the light (red sticker on base) stopped working due to water leaking into it, my LFS changed this for me. The tank is on my own custom shelfing unit built into the wall which i had 4 ppl standing on. After i had the tank for appox 2 years 3 months i changed from community to malawi set up, i had the rocks on a deep bed of sand and after about 3 months the tank cracked, water went through ceiling etc. I contacted my LFS and they told me to contact Juwel, so i did and Juwel asked me to send them the whole tank, including filter, light, lids so i did. Eventually they got back to me and asked me questions which i answered and they told me due to the fact i didnt have my Juwel aquarium on a Juwel stand they will not replace the tank as it causes the guarantee to be void. I read the guarantee and it didnt state this and told them that. After a debate they accepted that the guarantee didnt state this condition. They then kept contacting me and asking me questions such as what colour is my tank? how was it broken? what did you send? i gave vague answers and didnt tell them how it was cracked. eventually they told me they were unable to find my tank and it must have got lost in transit from the LFS to the wholesalers and them. they sent me another tank which was a 'B' grade tank and within about 2 months the light unit failed again, i contacted them and they refused to replace the light unit and told me they couldnt send my working one back as they didnt know where it was and insited they told me not to send the light unit. they told me if i go to my LFS they will know if i send it back and got aggresive on the phone. I went to my LFS and they willingly changed it for me :) Since then i have spoken to juwel and questioned them as i pretended to be someone else, i asked how my tank broke and they said it was a faulty seal, i then told them it was me and she refused she said that and shouted and swore at me down the phone saying i was calling her a liar etc. since then the Juwel tank broke again (my fault) and due to the massive problem i had with them i would never use them again. i also lost lots of fish during the process and juwel told me i should have a spare tank for problems.

poor compant in my eyes and their customer services is appauling.
