Hi,
I am in Thailand so cannot actually ask anyone in the shop about this but I recently bought four fish that look the same type, about 1.5inches long with a stocky body , quite large side fins, a dorsal fin and single tail fin, the body flattens out towards the snout which carries a large mouth which is slightly upturned. Two are yellow and two are yellow with black dappling, eyes are on side of head.

These fish have been nipping all my goldfish and have I believe caused the death of a baggy eyed goldfish by their worrying it, I have now removed them from the tank, but after I removed them my red finned shark continued to constantly bother my baggy eyed goldfish whose rear body had turned from black to silver, I removed the baggy eyed goldfish from the tank but it died overnight, I have another baggy eyed goldfish same as the dead one that the red finned shark does not bother. All other fish are OK and I change 25% water every two weeks, though tank is only about 5 weeks with fish in it.

Any ideas as to the identity of these yellow fish and the reason my baggy eyed goldfish died?

u have any pics??? im not great on types of fish but if u have pics the other lot here should know wot it is

Just taken some pics but cannot upload them as I don't know about urls, how about adding a straight 'browse computer' function for us dummies.

Upload them onto a photoucket account and then just copy and paste the img code. It's hard to tell from the descriptions

Sound like Golden Wonders to me.

Sounds like the goldfish just got stressed to death, partly by the fish and probably partly because they shouldn't be kept in tropical temps.

This is an interesting statement , aired a little on a previous post, the point being that all goldfish in the tropics and there are a lot of them, obviously live in tropical temperatures, in fact my thermometer reads a natural 29"c which is hotter than any recommendations I have seen for tropical fish in temperate climates.

But there are a lot of tropical fish in the tropics and they and the goldfish seem to take this in their stride.

Gave it a try on Pixum and it responded ' not allowed to use this image extension on this board'.

So in the absence of a nice and simple 'browse my computer' option ..........

If you want a 'Browse' option, go to the 'Member's Aquarium and Fish Pictures' section, and upload it there. Then post a link to your thread here, and wah-la. :D People can probably help ID your fish there too, so I'm sure you'll get an ID one way or another.

Hi spacebass :)

I was wondering, since you mentioned that your tank only had fish in if for 5 weeks, if you understand about cycling a tank. Do you do water tests to check for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? If not, it's possible that your fish had become weak and maybe sick before the others started attacking them. They might have sensed this.

A 25% water change is no where near enough for goldfish, if you only do it every two weeks. It's also important when keeping fish in warmer water, to do extra water changes and possibly have an airstone to help move the surface of the water which will keep the oxygen level from dropping too low.

It's late in New York and I will be going offline, but other members can advise you (maybe even better than I can) if you have questions about cycling your aquarium. Good luck with them. I hope your problem gets resolved. :D

Dear Inchworm,

Thank you for your comments, I do understand about cycling a tank, at least I have read about it quite a lot and did add plants and run it for a couple of weeks to try and establish good bacteria and changed a third of the water before adding fish. But because of the very high price of testing kits here in Thailand especially compared with price of fish tanks etc I have not tested the water as i should imagine practically no one else in Thailand has.

I cannot publish the fish I have in my 28 gallon tank as I would immeadiately be reported to the intenational RSPCA but it it is a lot better than most other tanks round here. My problem is Thai girlfriend who loves big goldfish and I must admit they all look pretty healthy and swim around in what looks like a normal fashion.

I do have a problem with my red fin shark apparently worrying the Goldfish though this is not all the time.

I will take him back to shop.

I will change 25% water every week and get an airstone and a bigger tank when funds permit as my lady just bought a bala shark that I read needs a big big tank not to mention a couple of pals to school with!!

curiosity here, but wot in the 28gal that would arouse interest from RSPCA??? they illegal or extremely overcrowded??? and my advice which i seen given few times onn the site is rather than buy more fish try sorting ones ya got first. and instead of buying tank save money towards testing kit as thats more important, if ya girl aint happy let her sulk for a bit she be much happier if her goldfish stay alive dontcha think

Not a Golden Wonder then?

sorry for not commenting on this and thank you for the pic, but it looks like a golden wonder has a more classic fish shaped pointed snout and my fish have a broad almost upturned mouth rather than a pointed mouth with less prominent scales though this could be the pic, they definitely stick together, when I put one back in the tank he it flitted around nervously viewing itself in what i take to be the mirror like sides, not going near the other fish but when I added another back with it it wasn't long before they started worrying the gold fish, so i took them out again and will return them to the shop. I will try an upload a picture tomorrow.

I have now put an airstone in.

Thank you Anastasia for advice on this.

Well glass cats I think most of the population of the world would be flabbergasted if you showed them a couple of goldfish and a 40 gallon tank and said that was the minimum size for them, as they would if you showed them three 4" bala sharks and said they needed a 120 gallon tank, I think should the world stick to these guidelines as no doubt it should the aquarium industry would fold overnight. So yes i am afraid my tank is well overcrowded by professional standards, and I have no intention of buying anymore fish, and as my girlfriend believes her one fish died because of the behaviour of fish I bought, an opinion that holds some credibility on this board and as an identical fish has not died or been harrassed by other fish , it seems to me water quality may not be the answer, and I am taking steps to improve this without spending big money and possibly opening a pandoras box that could end up with a worse situation than present, which is all fish are swimming about about robustly looking great and with improved management scheduled.
If I thought water quality was the problem I would buy the gear but right now enough is going right for me to leave this option open.
