Hello, I'm having a little difficulty with hair algae and I'm wondering what steps I should take to rule out specific causes.

I have a 10g tank that has recently cycled, 7 weeks old.

I have 2 anubias, 1 java fern, and 1 bunch of hygrophylia polysperma(?). That's not alot of plants, but maybe the plants are to blame? The plants are growing and look healthy, no dead leaves etc. All looks green and healthy.

The filter is a Aquaclear 30 (turnover of 150 gallons per hour) but I only recently changed from a weaker filter. The algae has been around since the old filter was running.

I don't have a powerhead for CO2

Nitrites and Ammonia are 0, and nitrates have only crept to just less than 5 ppm.

I don't mind having a little algae around, but this stuff is growing on glass and anubias and I want to prevent it from getting out of control. Any suggestions? Do phosphate removers like Green-X work and are they safe for aquarium?

I have a couple of malaysian trumpet snails that hitchhiked a ride on one of my plants, will they eat this type of algae.

Do zebra snails eat this type of algae?

sorry, forgot to mention I use a 14 watt sunglo light and leave it on for 10-12 hours a day. I do have lots of windows, but very little direct light. Thanks

Algae usually grows due to an excess of nutrients. You only have 1.4 wgp but leaving it on for 10-12 hours could be the start of it. I usually have it on for only 8 hours, and once it starts it is a pain to kill. You can use Flourish Excel to help get rid of it. You dont need a powerhead to use Co2. You can use a simple glass diffuser or run the line into the bottom of your aquaclear filter. I just stick the hose in between the little slots. good place to start.
