Afternoon all, My dad and my girlfriends dad both have really nice ponds but both suffer badly from algae.

Now my girlfriends dad only has a pump that runs to a small waterfall so we are looking at getting him a uv filter.

But my dad has two Filters one just a bio filter the other is a uv filter but still has major problems with algae . We have tried most chemical cures but still your lucky to see any fish at all. Any ideas on what can be done ?

It might sound daft but is the UV bulb working, you cant see them in daylight and to look at them with your eyes is pretty dangerous, the one I have has a little tiny viewing space so as you can see if its working, also if the bulb is working it kills off the green algea but your mechanical pump has to be strong enough to filter it out of the water, at this time of year the algea will be growing really fast, try planing lots of oxygenating plants as well to combat the algea but if the filter isnt powerful enough the plants will get clogged up with the dead green algea, it might sound pessimistic but i'm sure it will sort it self out.

Like Haveagojoe says, check you UV bulb. Ours recently went and the water was green. Got a new bulb tuesday by wednesday water was clear.

We also have a algea pad that you put in the filter (I think by a company called TAP) they promise results in 4 days.

That really helps too along with Barley straw near the filter in point. Since getting the algea pad, we haven't had to use any other chemicals.

Hope this helps.
