I was given a used 50 gallon fish tank and found out it was resealed do to a small leak, then never used again. It was given to me by a family member. I asked what kind of silicon sealant they had used and they told me it was this all purpose clear silicone sealant from Walmart.

And I've tried looking up info to know if this is safe now or if if its only good reptiles/hamsters and such.
I was planing on getting a turtle habitat and well I don't want to get any if this will just kill them.

I've went an read the tube at the store and it doesn't say it isn't safe for aquarium use or anything it shouldn't be use for.

If anyone has any help it would be greatly appreciated .
I'm on with buying a new 55gallon tank if I have to. But if I can save the money that's ok too.

As it has 'mildew resistance' it means it has anti-bacterial properties and therefore will inhibit beneficial bacterial development.

Unfortunately, this means you will have to remove it all and reseal with an inert silicone sealant. Any silicone will do as long as it doesn't 'prevent' mildew, fungus, etc. You should be able to find it cheap in any home hardware store.

You can buy a special plastic tool to strip the silicone off and you will need surgical spirit (or similar) to clean off the residue before re-applying.

1) Remove the old silicone using the tool or a razor blade. You do not need to actually remove the small amount between the glass panes, just the build up over the joints.

2) Clean off residue with surgical spirit and the razor. Clean and dry joints.

3) Add the new silicone with a caulk gun and smooth with your finger or plastic tool.

4) Leave for 24hrs to cure

5) Fill with water and test for leaks
