Hi,

Just bought a male and female platy. They have literally been in my tank for about 3 hours, they were properly acclimatised over the course of 30 minutes, and released the same time as four neon tetras. Prior to them being added all I had in my tank were four guppies (2 male, 2 female), and a batch of 8 fry (in a floating nursery) I'm sure its just me be paranoid, but I'm a bit worried about the male platy. He seems really shy, and wont come out from hiding amongst the plants, he didn't even rise for food. I'm worried he might be intimidated by a young male guppy who keeps approaching him...is this even possible (the platy is twice the size of the guppy)? The male platy also has his dorsal fin permanently up...is this a defensive response? Anything I can do to help him settle in?

Thanks!

I will be moving this post to the livebearer section of the forum. Please give your new platy a bit of time to become accustomed to his new home. If you have a new fish that is having trouble adjusting to a new tank, the usual approach is to turn off the lights in the tank and just let that fish settle in. It may not eat well for a couple of days so don't worry about that too much. I focus mainly on livebearers and find they are almost trouble free. The few minor problems I see with them are nothing compared to the issues I experience when I bring home a cichlid or even an egg scatterer.
